Dr. Enrique Hernández-Pérez, my friend, and internationally respected colleague, requested that I elaborate on my unique professional journey from maxilofacial surgery to cosmetic surgery. I am a Board Certified Cosmetic Surgeon and a Professor of both Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Facial Plastic Surgery at Michigan State University (East Lansing, Michigan, U.S.A.). My university studies began with dentistry, later continuing in maxilofacial surgery. While practicing maxilofacial surgery, I also studied medicine, gaining the M.D. degree, and continued study in cosmetic surgery. During these years I came to the conclusión that cosmetic surgery is more than a single discipline. Its foundation actually consists of the amalgamation of diverse disciplines resulting in new ways of diagnosis and treatment, placing it at the forefront of medicine and surgery.
