Editorial – Cosmetic Surgery – Art or Science?

Descripción:

The hilarious increase in Cosmetic Surgery trends, the perpetual rise of cosmetic surgeons, along-with the enormous increase in minimally invasive and injectable beautifying techniques, no doubt reflects the immense human desire to “LOOK BEAUTIFUL”. But what exactly is Cosmetic Surgery? Is it an art or science or just a practice of set up norms? The author believes, Cosmetic Surgery is basically an art. However, the backbone of this art is “Cosmetic Science & Practice”. The author initiated practice of Cosmetic Surgery, some decades ago in the last century, when Cosmetic Surgery was in its infancy. He started practice of Cosmetic Surgery as a “GROSS ART”- Liposuction with big cannulas, face-lifts with extended incisions, hair-transplants with wider punches etc. However, with experience, he started to refine this art. There was no science involved in this “REFINEMENT OF COSMETIC SURGERY”. Over the years, he changed the trend of Cosmetic Surgery from “GROSS ART” to “REFINED ART”, from “EXTENDED SURGERY” to “MINI-INVASIVE QUICK SURGERY”, with certainly much improved results, quicker recovery and walk in walk out surgeries. He changed the anesthesia of Klein to Khawaja’s anesthesia, with no sedation. With the basic science of Cosmetic Surgery in mind, he changed the anesthesia of Klein, using more lidocaine safely, avoiding IV sedation, using low doses of Adrenaline and using freezing techniques. So, this was not science at all. It was an art, learned over years of practice.
