Cancer cells are immortal – as a result of telomerase, they regenerate the receding telomere ends and maintain immortality via this means in 85% of the cases.1 In 15% of the cases, they achieve immortality via alternate mechanisms.2 The general concept is that cancer cells utilize glucose as a sole source of energy and metabolism, and if deprived of glucose, cancer cells starve. However, recent studies have shown that it is not true. Cancer cells can also utilize fatty acids and amino acids in case of need and can switch metabolism just like normal cells.
