Fat transplants have been used in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery for more than a century. For many years, however, this procedure was practically forgotten. With the advent of liposuction as one of the most common procedures in cosmetic surgery, fat transplantation began receiving renewed interest approximately 15 years ago, and it has been used with good results for the correction of facial wrinkles, and for improving facial and body defects, either congenital (hemi-facial atrophy) or acquired (usually traumatic). There have been important developments, over the years, in fat transplants to various areas of the body. Satisfactory results have been obtained by injecting fat into female breasts, buttocks, and calves. The use of autologous fat for penile enhancement was first reported in 1993, and again in 1996.
