In contrast to plastic surgery, that is the surgery for defects and deficits, cosmetic surgery is surgery to beautify. However, there is some overlap between the two specialties since plastic surgeons are now doing cosmetic surgery and cosmetic surgeons do some plastic surgery. The law usually places the cosmetic surgeon as a part of plastic surgery and tends to use the requirements of Standard of Care as in plastic surgery. The Standard of Care is what a reasonably competent surgeon would do in the same or similar circumstance.
